CHAPTER TWENTY-NINE

The afternoon sun was beating wells of light into my eyes as I gazed up into the sky. I felt fulfilled after having finished sweeping a bunch of bear hybrids and bagging some half decent loot. Now I was pumped to fight more monsters so I could level up. I looked down to Jezz, about to suggest us moving onto my next quest, except Jezz was on the ground panting. She clenched her chest as sweat stamped her forehead.

Odd, she barely lifted a finger when she fought her share of Zangaw. Why was she suddenly so winded?

But before I could bend over and help her, she snatched my wrist and yanked me toward a demolished building. I didn’t have time to ask her what was going on before I found myself huddled underneath a pile of beaten planks of wood and iron. She pulled me to crouch right next to her, her eyes surveying the skies.

“Jezz, what’s going—”

“Shh!” She hushed me as she studied a black bird fly by. We crouched silently for thirty seconds as the bird flew a distance away from us, and that was when Jezz finally released the breath she was holding. “Oh Mama, that was close! I didn’t think I’d make it in time!”

“Make what in time?”

She dropped her elbows and her knees on the ground and sighed. “My time warp is still at level 1, so it’s not something I’m an expert at. Tie that in with a retaining spell, and who knows what could happen. I sure didn’t!” She jerked her head up and wailed, “There’s so many factors to consider. Your case was complex!” She turned her head to me and puffed up her cheeks. “You try rewinding time to the point before you fought Lucyna and then rewind it again as a retention checkpoint to the moment before her henchman found us here! Not an easy thing to do!”

I chuckled lightheartedly. “Jezz, have you been drinking?”

“WHAT?! DRINKING?!” she fumed, then bolted up her feet and snatched me by my collar.

I felt like a ragdoll the way she dragged me along the ground before I scrambled myself to my feet, Jezz’s face growing even redder at my comment. “DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT I JUST WENT THROUGH?!”

I gave her a sheepish smile, “No-n-no?” Was that a trick question? She said something about time warping and rewinding incidents that I couldn’t even remember. I felt terrible, because it looked like she went through some shit, and I couldn’t reciprocate.

“Please?!” she begged, her rage turning into sorrow. “Please tell me that I didn’t spend all of that mana and burn out my Tempus stone for nothing, and we can still save those people!”

“Hey, Jezz, I want to get on the same page with you, but I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

She released me and keeled over exhaustedly. The wolf girl lay there on the ground with her arms and legs sprawled, wearing a defeated look on her face. “All of that preparation for nothing…”

I took a seat by her and tossed my arms over my bent knees.
